NATA The National Aptitude Test in Architecture
  Conducted by Council of Architecture)
NATA is an  Exam For Admission to B. ARCH at UN AIDED / PRIVATE Colleges

WHAT IS NATA?  The National Aptitude Test in Architecture (NATA) tests the aptitude of the applicant for study of Architecture. 10+2 or PUC students who want are desirous of taking admission to first year of undergraduate course in Architecture (Bachelor of Architecture) in India take NATA. NATA scores are used by admissions authorities of different Government, Govt aided & unaided Schools/Colleges of architecture. NATA is conducted by COA - Council of Architecture.

Official site for NATA is  www.nata.in

NATA can be given from mid march till end of July every year at designated test centers.
NATA can be taken any number of times in a year. This means if a student gets less score he can retake the test to improve his score by re-registering for the NATA by paying fees again. However NOT the best score, but the average of the scores is taken into consideration. For example a student scores 80/200 marks in the first attempt and 110/200 marks in the second attempt his overall score is (80+110)/2 = 95 marks. If in the second attempt he managed to score only 50/200 then his overall score would get reduced to (80+50)/2 = 65. So it is always better to prepare well for the exam and get good scores in the first attempt itself. NATA scores are valid for 2 years.

ELIGIBILITY: Candidates having 50% marks in 10+2 or equivalent examination with mathematics as one of the subject, only are eligible for admission to B.Arch. Course.

NATA Syllabus:  The test is in two parts. A paper based drawing test for two hours and computer based online aesthetic sensitivity test for one hour. The test measures aptitude of the candidate through two sections – a paper based section for drawing and computer based section for aesthetic sensitivity.
Drawing Test : This is a two hour paper where candidate has to attempt 3 questions. The drawing aptitude is judged on the following aspects -

  • Ability to sketch a given object proportionately and rendering the same in visually appealing manner.
  • Visualizing and drawing the effects of light on the object and shadows cast on surroundings.
  • Sense of perspective drawing. Combining and composing given three dimensional elements to form a building or structural form.
  • Creating interesting two dimensional compositions using given shapes and forms.
  • Creating visual harmony using colors in given composition.
  • Understanding of scale and proportions.
  • Drawing from memory through pencil sketch on themes from day to day experiences.

Aesthetic Sensitivity Test : This is computer based test of one hour where candidate has to answer 40 multiple choice questions. The aesthetic sensitivity test measures perception, imagination and observation, creativity and communication along with architectural awareness and comprises of –

    • Visualizing three dimensional objects from two dimensional drawings.
    • Visualizing different sides of three dimensional objects.
    • Indentifying commonly used materials and objects based on their textural qualities.
    • Analytical reasoning. Mental Ability.
    • Imaginative comprehension and expression.
    • Architectural awareness.

JEE B.Arch Exams Entrance Preparation
  (Conducted By CBSE Board)
JEE MAIN IS EXAM FOR ADMISSION TO B.ARCH AT
CENTRAL/ NATIONAL GOVERNMENT FUNDED COLLEGES

Every year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts nationwide competitive examinations called Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main, earlier known as AIEEE) for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs, IITs, centrally funded technical institutions and other institutions funded by the state governments.

Students seeking admissions to B. Arch or B. Planning programmes (other than IITs) offered by national /state level architecture institutions / colleges need to appear for JEE B. Arch (Paper -2), which is a 3-hour pen and paper based exam consisting of: Part I – Mathematics – Objective Type Part II – Aptitude Test – Objective Type; and Part III – Drawing Test – Questions to test drawing aptitude

The merit list will be published based on 40% weightage to School Board marks in Class 12th (or equivalent) and 60% weightage to JEE (Main).  All National Institute of Technologies (NITs), School of Planning & Architecture (SPAs) and other government and self finance architecture schools are accepting JEE B.Arch.

Eligibility : Students having passed in final examination of 10+2 (Class XII) or its equivalent are eligible.  Those appearing for Class XII in current year may also appear in JEE B. Arch provisionally. However, admission criteria in the concerned institution / university will be followed as prescribed by concerned university / institution and as per the guidelines and criteria prescribed by AICTE.

Exam Course Part I and II : Part-1 contains Class XII basic mathematics questions like integration, derivation, line etc. and part-2 contains questions of quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, analytical reasoning, synonyms, antonyms and other general aptitude questions.

Exam Course – Part III : Part III contains questions on freehand drawing, geometrical drawing, three dimension perception, imagination and aesthetic sensitivity, and architectural awareness.

Freehand drawing: This would comprise of simple drawing common or day-to-day objects like furniture, equipment, etc., from memory. Candidates need to draw the object in its right form and proportion, surface texture, relative location and details of its component parts in appropriate scale.

Geometrical drawing: Exercises in geometrical drawing containing lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles etc.  Study of plan (top view), elevation (front or side views) of simple solid objects like prisms, cones, cylinders, cubes, splayed surface holders etc.

Three-dimensional perception:  Understanding and appreciation of three-dimensional forms with building elements, colour, volume and orientation and visualization through structuring objects from memory.

Imagination and aesthetic sensitivity: Composition exercise with given elements, including context mapping, creativity check through innovative use of with familiar objects and sense of colour grouping or application.

Architectural awareness: General interest and awareness of famous architectural creations – both national and international, places and personalities (architects, designers etc) in the related domain.
